Remember these? Royal Oak Schools recently restored and re-hung the murals that had been "lost" for over 25 years. They are in the Dondero Auditorium of the Royal Oak Middle School (formerly Royal Oak Dondero High School). For more information on the restoration, please visit: The Murals of Royal Oak

The cars of the 1950’s and 1960’s are now considered classics. These were the cars, often referred to as muscle cars or hot rods that were driven up and down Woodward Avenue as we cruised through the various restaurants, many of which featured “car hops”. To commemorate these classic vehicles, an annual “Woodward Dream Cruise” is held in Mid-August featuring 40,000 classic vehicles from all over the country. The week-long event, culminating in a massive cruise on Saturday, is attended by over one million car enthusiasts and owners. The cruise takes place between 8-Mile Rd. and Wide Track Drive in Pontiac. Visit www.woodwarddreamcruise.com for additional information.
Looking for more classic cars and hot rods? Make sure and visit The Cars we Drove in the 50's and 60's website. Turn up your volume and listen along to many fun tunes! Thanks to classmate Dennis Langlois for sending us the link!

Cruising up and down Woodward Avenue from the Totem Pole near 10 Mile Rd to Ted’s at Square Lake Rd. was one of our favorite past times, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. If you are longing for the taste of the Big Chief burger or the Pocahontas Special from the Totem Pole, the original recipes for each are served daily at Duggan’s Pub, located on the west side of Woodward north of 13 Mile Rd.

Known for its famous Fish n’ Chips, the Susie Q restaurant was another favorite stop along Woodward Ave. The original recipe for their Fish n’ Chips is currently available at Blarney Stone Pub on the West side of Woodward just north of 11 Mile Rd.

Ted’s Drive-In was the destination point of our Friday and Saturday night cruising. Leaving from Woodward and 10 Mile Rd. we would cruise many, if not all, the drive-in restaurants on the east side of Woodward on the way to Ted’s, a distance of 9 miles. After cruising the lot at Ted’s, we would then head south on Woodward back to our starting point, again cruising through the drive-in restaurants on the west side of Woodward. Once the 18 mile loop was finished, it wasn’t uncommon to start all over again. Of course, the price of gas was much less than today’s prices which would have made our cruising unaffordable.

Here is Hedge's Wigwam "back in the day". Next to it, you will find a photo of one of the original Indians that stood in front of the Restaurant. It is currently displayed at the Paint Creek Cider Mill in Oakland Township, Michigan. Restaurant picture provided courtesy of Historic Royal Oak.

Many a romantic evening was spent watching movies at the Oak Drive-In Theatre located on Normandy Rd. It was common knowledge that our “dates” would often be hidden either beneath a blanket in the back seat or in the trunks of our cars so we wouldn’t have to pay for their admission tickets. Once inside, our “dates” would join us in either the front or back seats of our cars.

Remember the first McDonald's? American Bandstand? Take a step back into time and enjoy some images from the 1950's and 1960's. You'll need Microsoft PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer. Enjoy! (hint: use your mouse to click through all of the pictures)
